by Erasmo Carlos Battistella

On the date that BSBIOS completes 16 years of foundation, the ECB Group company launched the 2020 Sustainability Report for the fifth consecutive year, highlighting the practices exercised in the social, economic, environmental and governance and ethics dimensions.

The document also presents the studies on the environmental impact, highlighting the estimated result of the carbon value on the emissions avoided by the company; and another, bringing an update on the economic impact of BSBIOS in the municipalities in which the company operates.

The Report follows the guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), adopting the ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) governance model and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Aligned with the company’s values - sustainability, integrity, commitment, innovation and value generation – it dialogues, engages and constructs the document together with its employees and its stakeholders, through the consultancy of the Fundação Instituto de Pesquisa Econômicas (FIPE).

The report highlights BSBIOS ‘commitment to generating sustainable value. In 2020, the company modified its corporate structure by acquiring 50% of the shares that belonged to Petrobras Biocombustível and, thus, became the holder of 100% of the business. In addition, BSBIOS ended last year with the mark of 755 million liters of biodiesel produced, thus continuing for the third consecutive year as the largest biodiesel producer in the Brazilian market.

Last year, the company made investments in infrastructure, technology and innovation of more than R $ 45 million in its units. The biodiesel industry in Passo Fundo (RS) was expanded by 43.5%, reaching the capacity to produce 414 million liters of biodiesel per year.

At the beginning of 2021, the company carried out further expansions at the Rio Grande do Sul and Marialva (PR) units, which now have the capacity to manufacture 468 million liters of biodiesel per year. In other words, the company has a total capacity of 936 million liters of biodiesel per year.

In addition, the company reached a turnover of R $ 5.3 billion in 2020 (57.5% higher than the previous year), a net profit of R $ 311.6 million and an EBITDA of R $ 574.4 million, which means the best financial result in the company’s history.

The economic impacts of BSBIOS ‘presence in Passo Fundo and Marialva are also significant. The company was responsible for 19.6% of the GDP of Passo Fundo and 29.8% of the GDP of Marialva, contributing with taxes in the sum of R $ 1 billion higher due to the activity of BSBIOS in the city of Rio Grande do Sul and R $ 470 million for the municipality of Paraná.

In 2020, the company also invested R $ 3.4 million in social projects aligned with its business and its purpose, with the responsibility of supporting actions that benefit the community, including initiatives that contributed to the prevention of Covid-19 during the pandemic.

This result reflects our commitment to grow organically, with a portfolio of investments in constant renewal. Operational excellence, care for environmental preservation and cooperation with the communities in which we operate are values that have been sustained and disseminated by the company since its creation.

National and international certifications attest to the quality, sustainability and compliance of our products. Among them, the ISCC certification – International Sustainability and Carbon Certification EU (International Certification in Sustainability and Carbon) and RenovaBio stand out.

ISCC attests that the biodiesel produced by BSBIOS, from the production of sustainable raw material (animal fats) to its industrialization, reduces the emission of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) from 86% to 90%, when compared to fossil diesel , contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. RenovaBio, on the other hand, is accredited to participate in the CBIOS (Decarbonization Credits) market, with the production of biodiesel from animal fats.

The company operates in the renewable energy sector in favor of the low carbon economy and, since 2018, has managed the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of its operations. After three years of these actions, it is possible to verify the effects of management, that is, even with the 38% increase in production, the intensity of GHG emissions has decreased by 9.1%, from 30.6 to 27, 8 kgCO2e / m3 of B100 biodiesel. This means that the biodiesel production process is being more efficient in terms of reducing GHG in the atmosphere.

In order to achieve the objectives of our strategic planning, BSBIOS definitely enters the advanced or second generation biofuels market. At the end of March, through the capitalization of the ECB holding company in BSBIOS, the company started to control the company ECB Paraguay, assuming the leadership of the Omega Green Biorefinery project. As a result, the company was renamed BSBIOS Paraguay and in its product portfolio will produce renewable diesel (HVO), aviation biokerosene (SPK) and green naphtha.

We will foster more and more businesses that position the organization among the three largest producers of biofuels in the world, in addition to becoming Carbon Neutral by 2030. We seek innovation and technological advances, recognizing our role in the context of the sustainable development of our activities, being absolutely committed to socio-environmental and governance (ESG) issues.
