Knowledge is the fuel of the sustainable future

by Erasmo Carlos Battistella

The energy transition is a global challenge that goes beyond borders, and an action that involves citizens, companies from all sectors, legislators and sectorial authorities. It must take place in an integrated manner in Brazil and on the American continent, which guarantees the decarbonization of the planet and compliance with climate agreements.

Investment in clean energy is the result of concrete evidence and proven results. This is not a work restricted to the Brazilian market, but it is the result of an international consensus, which brings together entities from the most varied academies and research institutes.

In Brazil, in the case of biodiesel, we have a 10% blend of biofuel with the fossil diesel that is offered at gas stations. In a plan established by law, we should be at 15% (the so-called B15) and thus contribute to the objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions as established in the National Biofuel Policy (RenovaBio).

An important lesson comes from Indonesia, which just adopted the B35 blend in February 2023. Implementation of the program is expected to absorb 1.65 million new workers and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 34.9 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.

This experience serves very well as a reference for our national project: that country started using a mixture of 2.5% in 2008 and after that, the percentage was increased to 10%, 15% and 20% in 2014, 2015 and 2016 , respectively. In 2020, the program moved to B30 and the expectation is that the biodiesel blend will continue to increase to 40%, 50% and 100%.

Today we must make decisions that will define the destinies of future generations, this is the legacy we are going to leave. For that, we need to follow a route towards a safe direction towards that future. And there is an important fuel that will allow us to get there: international knowledge and experiences.

This knowledge is strengthened day by day and the press plays a fundamental role in expanding it to society as a whole, which benefits from these decisions. Only together – the population, governments and companies – will we build a greener, more sustainable and healthier country for everyone.
