It is necessary to set the banner of advanced biofuels in forums that discuss sustainability

by Erasmo Carlos Battistella

In recent weeks, I have dedicated an important part of my time participating in forums for debate and reflection in which I was able to deepen the reflection on economic, social and environmental sustainability.

I insist on raising this flag personally in defense of advanced biofuels and I realize more and more that the various audiences at these events recognize the importance of strengthening the role of this energy solution for the future of the planet. I would like to highlight some of these events:

Global Stop Conference
On October 22, I participated in the event promoted by Instituto Parar. In the roundtable “Fleet Manager with an eye on the future”, I highlighted how biofuels can be allies for fleets on the path to sustainability. The table was mediated by Silvia Barcik, Director of Sustainability and Innovation at the Renault Institute and had the participation of José Domingos Fabris, PhD in Chemistry from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Max Fernandes, Director of Marketing and Sales at Arval , and Gleison André Lopes de Oliveira, Algar Telecom Fleet Coordinator.

International Fleet & Freight Seminar 2020
At the end of October, I was part of the panel “Best Practices in Sustainability” at the International Seminar on Fleets & Freight 2020”, conducted by the Besc Institute. The online event was the stage for discussions on techniques, materials, equipment, methods, new fuels and other initiatives that increase efficiency in the use of energy resources and reduce environmental impacts by cargo and passenger carriers. I emphasized in my lecture on the importance of consolidating biofuels in the first wave and the arrival of the second wave, with emphasis on our Omega Green Project and investment in development in Paraguay for the production of HVO, SPK and Nafta Verde. I was honored to share the panel with Edmar Prado Lopes Neto, CFO of Movida; Paulo Afonso de André, Professor and Researcher at the Experimental Air Pollution Laboratory of the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicinated at USP; Maurilio Novaes, Leader of Technological Development at EMBRAER; and Marlon Arraes Jardim Leal, General Coordinator of Ethanol of the Directorate of Biofuels of the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME).

The video of the event can be seen at this link.

Seminar “Bioenergy and the transition to a sustainable low carbon bioeconomy: opportunities for Brazil and Japan”
On the night of November 9, morning of the 10th in Japan, I participated in this seminar promoted by the Embassy of Brazil in Tokyo in partnership with the Renewable Energy Institute. In the panel “The future of bioenergy and advanced bioeconomy”, I highlighted the potential of Brazil in producing first and second generation biofuels, in addition to highlighting our Omega Green project. The panel was attended by the Deputy Director of the Circular Biomass Resources Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan, Tadayuki Kanenaga, the Coordinator of the Genomics and Bioenergy Laboratory and UNICAMP’s International Bioenergy Doctoral Program, Gonçalo Pereira, the Deputy General Manager of EV System Laboratory at NISSAN Motor Motohisa Kamijo, and the CEO of Instituto Terra Verde Tomohito Ihara.

In all cases, the reflections were of the highest level.

Brazilian biodiesel is a consolidated product in the national energy matrix, with an important role in the replacement of fossil fuels, in the generation of jobs and income in the field and for the industrialization and aggregation of value throughout the production chain.
I highlighted some important aspects in these events about the advanced biofuels of the Omega Green Project. Their use represents a direct reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases, as they emit up to 85% less compared to fossil fuels.

Green Diesel HVO can be used as a direct replacement for fossil diesel in any proportion. Aviation kerosene SPK can also be used as a direct substitute for fossil products, in any proportion. Naphtha Green is a constant demand from the petrochemical industries, which are increasingly working on the development of green plastic.

The operation is scheduled for the first half of 2024.

And in order not to lose the rhythm, on November 17 and 18, I will be present at the BiodieselBR Conference, a digital event that brings together industry representatives and debates the most important issues in the sector. On the first day, at 9:30 am, I participate in the panel to debate “The future of the biodiesel sector after a year of Pandemic”.
It is important to leave our mark on the pages of the history of biofuels in this moment of great impact that the world has experienced. Our sector, with its strength, responded with great maturity to the challenges posed. And it was configured as the great alternative to build a greener and more sustainable world.
